Probiotic Power!
According to the World Health Organization, Probiotics are "Live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host". One benefit is a boosted immune system. For this reason, many people increase consumption of probiotics during winter months in order to help ward off colds and flu.
Some sources of probiotics include kefir, yogurt (see the non-dairy So Delicious brand if you are lactose intolerant or vegan), tempeh, miso, kombucha tea, and fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut and beet kvass (pictured left). Probiotics can also be taken in the form of supplements. The options are varied so you are sure to stumble upon a personal favorite or two if you haven't tried probiotics before. With nothing to lose and "friendly bacteria" to gain, why not see if "probiotic power" can benefit you?! |
