Dr. Terry Wahls

How Dr. Terry Wahls Cured her "Incurable" MS

I chose Dr. Terry Wahls for demonstrating the healing power of whole foods.  Below is a summary of the video posted on right - >

Dr. Terry Wahls:

* Discovered that we all need antioxidants, B vitamins and sulfur for  our mitochondria to thrive.

 * Knew she could get more of these vital components from whole foods  vs. pills – perhaps 100’s or even 1000’s times the amount of these healing  compounds from foods – compounds science has yet to name or identify.

* Made the switch to healing her body with whole foods (begins talking  about this 4 min. & 20 sec. in)

* Encourages consumption of a heaping dinner plate of fruits and  veggies – or 2 or 3 platefuls– each day.
The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine
* Explains that  The Hunter-Gatherer diets around the globe exceed RDA by  2-10 fold depending on the nutrient.

* Hunter-Gatherers knew more about eating for optimal health and vitality  than modern physicians and  scientists.

* The Hunter-Gatherer diet has more nutrition than the Am. Heart Assoc. diet, more than the American Diabetes Association Diet, more than USDA food pyramid diet.

* Dr. Wahls put together a diet based on Hunter-Gatherer concepts,  structured to be sure she was getting nutrients critical to her brain cells and mitochondria…
here’s what she came up with:

3 cups of green leaves,
3 cups sulphur rich  vegetables-
3 cups of bright color, grass fed meat, organ meat and seaweed.

* 3 cups is a dinner plate heaped high.  Greens are rich in Vitamins B,A,C,K and minerals.  Kale has the most nutrition per calorie of any plant.  The B vitamins will protect your brain cells and mitochondria , vitamins A & C support immune cells, Vit K keeps your blood vessels and bones healthy, minerals are co-factors for hundreds of different enzymes in our bodies.

* Plateful of Daily Greens dramatically lowers risk of cataracts and macular degeneration

* Eat more kale, green salads, dehydrated kale chips, green smoothies

* 3 cups of sulphur rich veggies every day –brain and mitochondria need sulphur… The  liver and kidney need sulphur so they can remove toxins from your bloodstream.

* The cabbage family is rich in sulphur – that includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, turnips rutabagas, radishes, collards and kale.  Onion family rich in sulfur – onions, garlic, leeks, chives, shallots, so are mushrooms and asparagus.

* 3 cups (I plate) of color each day: (preferably 3 different colors) Colors are Flavonoids and Polyphenols.  These are potent antioxidants that will support your retina, mitochondria, brain cells & removal of toxins.

* You can get your colors from vegetables like beets, carrots, peppers, & red cabbage or you can get them from berries and brightly colored fruits like peaches and oranges.

* Get high quality protein rich in omega 3 fatty acids.  These are very important to insulate the wiring in your brain and critical for the development of your jaw for straight teeth and development of a larger brain.  Wild fish like salmon and herring are highly recommended.

* Dr. Wahl recommends grass fed meat each day.

* Dr. Wahl recommends organ meats.  She explains that our ancient societies all valued organ meats.  They are concentrated sources of Vitamins, minerals and coenzyme Q.  They are particularly potent at supporting your mitochondria. Foods like liver and onion, heart, tongue, gizzards and sweet bread – (she recommends) once a week.

* Seaweed.  Ancients would travel great distances or trade to ensure access to seaweed.  Seaweed is a rich source of iodine and selenium. Your brain needs iodine to make myelin, the insulation for the wiring.   It also needs iodine remove toxins- in particular mercury, lead and heavy metals.  Adequate iodine lowers your risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer.   Studies have shown that 80% of Americans have relatively low iodine.  Therefore, have seaweed once a week to ensure and maintain adequate iodine levels.

* Most Americans can’t imagine eating 9 cups – 3 platefuls - ofvegetables and berries every day.  But…  If you will commit to having 9 cups of these incredibly healthy, wonderful-for-you vegetables and berries every day before you have grain, potatoes, dairy - you will have dramatically increased the vitamin and mineral content of your diet.  Plus you will have dramatically lowered the risk of food allergies.

* Food allergies and food sensitivities are far more common then we realize.  They are difficult to diagnose &  in particular sensitivity to gluten – the protein in wheat, rye and barley … And to dairy – the Casein protein in dairy is associated with a wide variety of health problems to include but not limited to:

eczema, asthma, allergies, infertility, irritable bowel, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, arthritis, chronic headache, neurological problems and behavior problems.

* Will you pay now to eat like this, or you will pay far more in prescription drugs, surgeries, dr. visits, missed time, nursing home care, etc… if you don’t invest in a healthy diet now.  The choice is yours.

* After 7 years of the best drugs and care, Dr. Wahl only became more disabled, dependent on a tilt reclined wheelchair.  This is when she had enough and designed her own diet, becoming a modern day Hunter-Gatherer.  In only 3 months after applying her diet, she could walk with one cane between exam rooms.  The month after that she could walk throughout the hospital without a cane.  The month after that she got on her bike for the first time in a decade and pedaled around the block.  9 months into her new way of eating, she pedaled 18 miles.  The following year she did a trail ride in the Canadian Rockies.

* She says: “I am the canary in the coal mine, here as a warning to all  of you...  We have a choice.  We can continue to eat that delicious,  convenient, tasty, processed food and watch ourselves and our children grow  steadily more overweight, depressed and diabetic… OR, we can continue to watch  health care costs balloon out of control, bankrupting us individually and  collectively as a country.  OR, we  can eat for our mitochondria, eating vegetables and berries, grass fed meat, organ meat and seaweed and have more vitality. I choose to teach the public about the  healing power of food....”

* Her dietary results on others with MS are breathtaking.

* Her motto: “Eat for your mitochondria – become an ambassador for your mitochondria!”

* We all have a choice.  What will yours be?
